Manuka Honey on Skin: Jar, Mask or Salve? What Really Makes Sense

Manuka honey on skin: what studies show for eczema and wounds, how to use it safely, and when to see a doctor instead of reaching for the jar.

📋 What You'll Learn

  1. How manuka honey differs from regular honey
  2. What the studies really show
  3. How to use it, step by step
  4. Mistakes to avoid
  5. Common questions, answered briefly
  6. The bottom line and when to see a doctor

A small jar of manuka honey can cost more than a whole crate of ordinary blossom honey. The reason is one compound: methylglyoxal, or MGO. According to the German health magazine Apotheken Umschau, regular honey contains up to 20 milligrams per kilo, manuka honey up to 1,200.

That is why manuka honey on skin has moved from the kitchen to the bathroom: as a mask, as an ingredient in salves, sometimes as a spoonful straight onto irritated skin. Whether that is a good idea depends on your question. Do you want to care for your skin, or treat a wound? Those are two very different things, and the answers differ.

Here is the evidence with real numbers, a simple routine for daily care with the Manuka Honey Hemp Salve, and the situations where the honey jar should stay in the cupboard.

Research Spotlight

Up to 1,200 mg MGO per kilo

Manuka honey compared with up to 20 mg in regular honey (Apotheken Umschau, 13 March 2026)

What makes manuka honey on skin different from regular honey?

The main difference is the amount of methylglyoxal (MGO). Manuka honey contains up to 1,200 mg of MGO per kilo, regular honey up to 20 mg. That is the figure Apotheken Umschau gave in its 13 March 2026 report.

Manuka honey comes from the nectar of the manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), which grows in New Zealand and Australia. The number after “MGO 400+” on a label means at least 400 mg of methylglyoxal per kilo. The higher the number, the higher the price.

What any honey can do, manuka can do too: it binds water. Medical News Today describes honey as a natural humectant that may help hold moisture in dry skin. Enzymes in honey also produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Both apply to ordinary blossom honey as well.

One point gets overlooked: the market is murky. Apotheken Umschau reports that roughly 1,700 tonnes of manuka honey are produced each year, while around 10,000 tonnes are sold. There is no single quality seal. German consumer advice points to membership of UMF (New Zealand) or the Australian Manuka Honey Association as a guide.

And one more thing for skin care: in a salve, honey is only one part of the formula, alongside waxes, oils and other care ingredients. The MGO number on a jar does not carry over to a care product. The Manuka Honey Hemp Salve, for example, combines manuka honey with propolis, beeswax, panthenol and aloe vera for dry, cracked skin, according to its product description. What counts is the whole formula, not the number on the honey jar.

What does the research say about manuka honey for skin and wounds?

The evidence is promising but thin: there are small studies and lab experiments, but few large, well-controlled trials on everyday care of dry or healthy skin.

One example is a study by Alangari and colleagues (2017, Immunity, Inflammation and Disease). Fourteen adults with atopic dermatitis lesions on both sides of the body applied manuka honey overnight to one site for seven days, while the other site stayed untreated as a control. The treated lesions improved significantly more. Skin staphylococci did not change significantly over that time, though. In cell experiments the honey reduced the release of inflammatory signals. The authors themselves say this needs to be confirmed by randomised, controlled trials. Fourteen people is a signal, not proof.

Wound care has better data. The Cochrane review by Jull and colleagues (2008) covered 19 trials with 2,554 participants. For mild to moderate burns, honey may shorten healing time compared with conventional dressings, but all of those trials came from a single centre. For venous leg ulcers, honey dressings added to compression did not significantly improve healing at 12 weeks. For other wound types the evidence was too limited to judge.

Apotheken Umschau also mentions a larger review of 26 studies with around 3,000 patients that found faster healing of burns than with conventional dressings. The antibacterial effect of methylglyoxal was shown in the lab, among others at TU Dresden in 2006.

The key sentence: all of this concerns sterile medical-grade honey sold as a medical device, not honey from the breakfast shelf and not cosmetics. For acne, dry skin and sensitive skin, Medical News Today notes there are no large studies yet. Studies on an ingredient are also not proof for any particular care product.

„A honey that impresses in the lab is not skin care yet. And skin care is not wound treatment.“

How do you use manuka honey on skin the right way?

For daily care of dry, cracked skin, a salve containing manuka honey is easier and cleaner than a spoon from the jar. Here is how to use it, for example with the Manuka Honey Hemp Salve:

  1. Patch test first. Apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm and watch the skin for 24 hours. If you see redness, itching or burning, do not use it more widely.
  2. Wash the skin with lukewarm water and pat it dry. Water that is too hot strips away more skin oils.
  3. Use about a pea-sized amount for an area the size of your palm. More does not mean more care, it just feels sticky.
  4. Warm the salve briefly between your fingers and massage it in with circular movements until it is absorbed. That takes about a minute.
  5. Repeat once or twice a day, ideally after showering while the skin is still slightly damp.
  6. For very rough hands, apply a thin layer in the evening and put on thin cotton gloves.

If you need something softer for sensitive spots or larger areas, the Organic Manuka Oat Repair Butter 100ml is an alternative. According to the manufacturer it is an intensive care balm with propolis, calendula and hemp oil for dry, sensitive skin. Give your skin two to three weeks before you judge. Care works through habit, not a single application, and dry skin in autumn and winter needs a steady routine, not occasional top-ups. Both products are cosmetics: they may help care for the skin and improve how it feels, they do not treat disease.

💡

Pro Tip

Do your forearm patch test in the evening, not in the morning. You will not notice a reaction in the middle of a workday, and you get the full 24 hours of observation.

What mistakes do people make with manuka honey on skin?

The most common and most important mistake: putting jar honey on an open wound. Pharmacist Benjamin Kirchweger advises strongly against it, as quoted by Apotheken Umschau. Food honey is not sterile and can contain spores. For wounds there are approved, sterile medical products.

The second mistake is overrating strength. A high MGO value says something about the honey in the jar in the lab, not about how a product feels on your skin. For care, a well-tolerated formula matters more than any number.

Third: skipping the patch test. Bee products can cause allergies. Medical News Today notes that people with a bee sting allergy likely face a higher risk and should check with a professional first. The same source advises people with diabetes to get medical guidance beforehand.

Fourth: treating eczema that a doctor is managing with honey alone. Care can be a good addition, but it does not replace the therapy your dermatologist prescribed.

Fifth, even though it is about food: children under one year should not be given honey, manuka included. It can contain Clostridium botulinum spores that can produce a dangerous toxin in an immature gut. For skin care on babies, ask your paediatrician.

⚠️ Important Note

Manuka honey and cosmetic products containing bee ingredients are not a substitute for medical care. See a doctor if a wound weeps, oozes pus, feels hot or keeps getting bigger, if you develop a fever, or if eczema gets worse despite care. If you know you are allergic to honey, propolis, beeswax or bee stings, talk to your doctor first. If your skin burns, swells or comes up in hives, stop using the product right away. If you have trouble breathing, call emergency services.

What do people ask most about manuka honey on skin?

Real questions people search for on Google, Perplexity, and ChatGPT.

Can I put manuka honey directly on my face?

On intact skin, many people use it as a mask, but tolerance is not guaranteed. Do a patch test on your forearm first and wait 24 hours. For acne, Medical News Today notes there are no large studies yet. If the skin is inflamed or broken, skip the honey and ask a dermatologist.

Does manuka honey help with eczema?

The evidence is thin. In a small study of 14 adults (Alangari et al., 2017), treated lesions improved more than untreated ones after seven days. The authors call for randomised, controlled trials to confirm it. Care may support the skin but does not replace the treatment your doctor prescribed.

What MGO rating do I need for skin?

There is no set value. “MGO 400+” means at least 400 mg of methylglyoxal per kilo. For skin care, the whole formula and how well you tolerate it matter more than the highest number. A higher rating mostly makes the honey more expensive.

Is manuka honey dangerous if I am allergic to bees?

It can be. People with a bee sting allergy likely face a higher risk of a reaction, according to Medical News Today. Talk to your doctor first and avoid products with honey, propolis or beeswax until it is clarified.

Can I put manuka honey from the jar on a wound?

Apotheken Umschau advises against it. Supermarket honey is not sterile and can contain spores. For wounds, approved sterile medical products exist. If a wound weeps, oozes pus or feels hot, you need medical care.

Is manuka honey on skin worth it? The bottom line

✅ Key Takeaways

  • Manuka honey has up to 1,200 mg MGO per kilo, regular honey up to 20 mg. That does not prove it works as skin care.
  • The good data is for sterile medical honey on wounds, not for jar honey and not for cosmetics.
  • Always patch test for 24 hours, and see a doctor for weeping or inflamed wounds.

Manuka honey on skin is an interesting ingredient with a solid lab basis and a few small studies, but without the large body of evidence for everyday care. That is not a letdown, just an honest classification.

For dry, cracked skin, a well-made product beats the jar from the shelf: the Manuka Honey Hemp Salve and the Organic Manuka Oat Repair Butter 100ml are both designed for that purpose. Wounds are a different matter: sterile medical honey from the pharmacy, or simply medical care.

And if you are not sure whether your skin problem needs care or treatment, a dermatologist is the best first step. Then you know where you stand and can build your care routine around it.
